The other night, the dogs seemed timid to go out, but were vocal about something. I saw a movement and thought I had left Jynx out accidentally. When I searched for him, he was looking at me from a chair in the living room wondering what the commotion was about. I went outside to get a closer look at what was in the yard.
Before long, I realized that I had a half-grown possum wandering the fence line. It didn’t seem happy to be there, probably due to the dogs going nuts inside. I chased it around the yard to where we had a bigger opening for it to squeeze out of, so it was a little smaller than the 10 pound Milo. I’d put this critter at around 4 pounds and 18 inches long including the tale. Once he was gone, the dogs willingly went out.
A few nights later, I could smell a black kitty with a white stripe or two down its back somewhere in the neighborhood. I never saw it though.
This is one of the disadvantages to living right next to a pasture in a half-developed portion of town. Given the downturn in the housing economy of our region, it is unlikely we’ll be more developed anytime soon. A new high school went in not too far away, though, so maybe I’m wrong.
The plus side of living where I do is that it is fairly quiet. There aren’t too many neighbors. In fact, the house right next to me is vacant at the moment. Being in a quiet area does mean that I can write without being disturbed. Unless it is someone or a critter who lives in the house, that is. Then again, it seems like the others in my house like to sleep a lot, adding to the quietness. I love it!
I firmly believe that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t live in such a neighborhood. So, bring on the occasional possum. I don’t mind.
