coyote

The other day, I got up from my desk for a short break and to make some tea. I spotted coyote 1 outside, eating something. Then it went into stalking mode a little closer to me. I didn’t see coyote 2 until it came bounding out of the tallgrass and went next to coyote1. Then coyote 2 went back into the grass. I would see a tail flick from time to time above the grasses, but that was it. Coyote 1 remained stalk still.

About the time where I said to myself, “I wonder if they found a nest of packrats,” coyote 2 came out with a huge one and gave it to coyote 1. Coyote 1 then went back to where I first saw it and enjoyed its second rat that I’d seen it with. I took many pictures, but never really caught a good one of coyote 2. Maybe its tail is in the frame I’m posting, but I don’t see it.

What I found the most interesting is the excitement coyote 2 showed throughout this little hunt. It did all the digging. It gave up at least one rat to coyote 1. Coyote 1 was content to just watch coyote 2 dig away.

I like to observe people and animals. Its how I come up with all sorts of plots, characters, and descriptions. My writing is much richer, and I just need to be like coyote 1. And sometimes, I even get a little food passed to me (especially when I work K-State games where there is tailgating going on).

One of my favorite sayings is, “I’m an author. Anything you say or do may end up in my next book.” I would add that it must be interesting for me to write about it. Even better if I can get a good picture of it.

Observing isn’t just for the coyotes!
